Barcelona president Joan Laporta has backed Spain to defeat Argentina in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final but believes the referee’s performance could play a crucial role in determining the outcome.

Ahead of Sunday’s title clash at MetLife Stadium, Laporta said Spain would have a stronger chance of lifting the trophy if the match official keeps firm control of the contest.

“If the referee asserts his authority, Spain will have a better chance of winning. The referee must impose himself,” Laporta said.

The Barcelona president also praised Spain’s possession-based style, suggesting it contrasts with Argentina’s more physical brand of football.

He further expressed pride in the significant Barcelona influence within the Spanish national team, noting that several La Masia academy graduates are expected to feature in the final.
