Former U.S. President Joe Biden’s battle with cancer has taken a troubling turn, with his son Hunter Biden revealing that the disease has spread further and is causing his father significant pain.
Speaking during an emotional BBC Newsnight interview, Hunter said the former president’s prostate cancer had metastasized into his bones “and further,” describing the condition as painful and debilitating. He also admitted that watching his father go through the illness has been extremely difficult for the family.
The latest disclosure has renewed public attention on the health of the 83-year-old former president, whose age and physical condition became major political issues during the 2024 presidential campaign.
Biden’s office first announced in May 2025 that he had been diagnosed with an aggressive form of prostate cancer with a Gleason score of 9, which had already spread to his bones. Officials said at the time that the cancer was hormone-sensitive, allowing doctors to pursue treatment aimed at managing the disease.
Biden later underwent hormone treatment and radiation therapy as doctors worked to control the cancer.
Hunter’s latest comments suggest the former president is now dealing with considerable discomfort. However, neither Hunter nor Biden’s office has publicly specified exactly where beyond the bones the cancer has spread.
Despite his health challenges, Hunter said his father remains engaged with issues important to him and continues making public appearances.
The disclosure inevitably carries political significance because Biden’s health and age dominated the final months of his presidency. His widely criticized 2024 debate performance against Donald Trump intensified concerns about whether he could withstand another presidential campaign, ultimately contributing to his withdrawal from the race.
Hunter rejected suggestions that family members could simply have prevented Biden from seeking another term, insisting that his father made his own decisions.
