Lil Durk’s federal legal battle is far from over, with the Chicago rapper’s remaining VICAR murder trial now scheduled for August 30, 2027, nearly a year later than previously expected.
U.S. District Judge Michael W. Fitzgerald approved the postponement on September 30, moving the trial from its previous October 5, 2026 date. The delay was requested by attorneys representing Durk, whose legal name is Durk Banks, and several co-defendants. Federal prosecutors did not oppose the request.
Durk agreed to waive his right to be brought to trial sooner under the Speedy Trial Act. His attorneys informed the court that they had discussed those rights with him and that his decision to accept the later trial date was informed and voluntary.
Defense lawyers argued that additional preparation time was necessary because of the complexity of the prosecution, the number of defendants and the enormous volume of evidence that must be reviewed before trial.
Court records reportedly include hundreds of gigabytes of digital material alongside more than 30,000 pages of reports, photographs, witness statements and other documents. Judge Fitzgerald found that the complexity of the case justified excluding the additional preparation period from the speedy-trial timetable.
The remaining charges include murder in aid of racketeering, commonly referred to as a VICAR charge, along with a related firearms count. These charges were separated from the case that went before a jury earlier in 2026.
The new trial date comes after Durk scored a major courtroom victory on September 11, when a federal jury acquitted him on all five counts considered during his first trial. Prosecutors had accused him of involvement in an alleged murder-for-hire plot targeting rapper Quando Rondo that resulted in the death of Rondo’s cousin, Saviay’a Robinson.
Despite that acquittal, Durk remains in federal custody because the separate VICAR and firearms charges are still pending.
With his next trial now set for August 30, 2027, the Grammy-winning rapper faces another lengthy legal fight as his defense team prepares to challenge the government’s remaining allegations.
Durk has pleaded not guilty, and the outstanding charges remain allegations unless proven beyond a reasonable doubt in court.
