President John Dramani Mahama has ordered the immediate dissolution of the Board of Trustees of Ghana’s National Cathedral project, marking another major development surrounding the long-stalled project.
The directive was communicated in a letter dated September 18, 2026, signed by the Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Mahama Ayariga. According to the letter, the dissolution takes effect immediately.
Following the decision, the former trustees have been instructed to work with the project consultant to formally hand over the National Cathedral project site to the Ministry by October 31, 2026.
Government says the handover will allow it to determine the future direction of the project, which has remained unfinished amid years of public discussion over its funding, management and location.
The dissolved board was chaired by Apostle Professor Opoku Onyinah. In communicating the decision, Ayariga thanked members of the board for their service and commitment to promoting the Christian faith in Ghana.
The latest move comes days after government held discussions with leaders of the Christian Council of Ghana over possible options for the National Cathedral. Christian leaders had agreed to establish a technical committee to examine issues including funding and the project’s location before submitting recommendations to government.
President Mahama recently said he was not opposed to the idea of a National Cathedral but maintained that taxpayers’ money should not be used to finance its completion. He also raised concerns about the suitability of the current site.
The project has faced increased scrutiny following an audit of its operations. In July 2025, the Presidency announced the dissolution of the National Cathedral Secretariat and said further investigations and legal steps would follow findings concerning the project’s management.
With the Board of Trustees now dissolved and an October 31 deadline set for the site handover, attention will turn to the Mahama administration’s eventual decision on what happens next to the controversial project.
