Police in Jackson, Mississippi, have made a major breakthrough in the investigation into the death of Tasia Fortune, the 29-year-old Black woman whose body was discovered hanging from a tree behind an abandoned home last month.
Jackson Police Chief RaShall Brackney announced Friday that officers had arrested a man after Mississippi’s State Medical Examiner’s Office officially determined Thursday evening that Fortune’s death was a homicide.
Local television station WLBT identified the arrested man as Jacques Ratliff, reporting that he was taken into custody on Capitol Street Thursday night. Authorities had already obtained search and arrest warrants before the medical examiner’s homicide determination allowed investigators to move forward.
Fortune’s body was discovered on August 3 in the backyard of an abandoned property in Jackson. The disturbing circumstances surrounding her death quickly attracted national attention and sparked demands for answers from her family, community leaders and activists.
For weeks, questions remained over exactly how Fortune died. Police had said they were treating the case as a homicide while waiting for the medical examiner to officially determine the cause and manner of death.
That changed Thursday evening when investigators were informed that her death had officially been classified as a homicide.
Chief Brackney said the investigation remains active and indicated that additional arrests could follow. Police have not publicly disclosed a possible motive or explained what evidence allegedly connects the arrested man to Fortune’s death.
Authorities also have not announced evidence showing that Fortune’s killing was racially motivated, despite widespread public concern caused by the manner in which her body was discovered.
The homicide ruling and arrest mark a significant development for Fortune’s grieving family, which has spent more than a month demanding answers about what happened to the 29-year-old.
With investigators warning that more arrests may be coming, the case now enters a critical new phase as police work to establish who was responsible for Fortune’s death and why she was killed.
