Ghanaian TikToker Rita Konadu, popularly known online as Mamaone, has been granted bail in the sum of GH¢50,000 following her court appearance over alleged derogatory remarks directed at President John Dramani Mahama and First Lady Lordina Mahama.
The court reportedly ordered the 49-year-old content creator to provide two sureties as part of the conditions attached to her temporary release. Reports indicate that one of the sureties must be a civil servant earning at least GH¢2,500, while the sureties are also expected to satisfy the court’s residential requirements.
Konadu was arrested at Juaben in the Ashanti Region by the Cyber Vetting and Enforcement Team after allegedly publishing a TikTok video containing remarks authorities considered offensive and derogatory toward Ghana’s first couple. She was subsequently transported to Accra for questioning and further legal action.
Her case has now been adjourned to allow the prosecution and investigators additional time to continue their work. Public reports differed on the precise date scheduled for her next appearance at the time of publication.
The dramatic development has intensified debate across social media, with Ghanaians divided over the boundary between freedom of expression and potentially unlawful online conduct.
Supporters of the enforcement action argue that political commentary should not become an excuse for abuse, threats or defamatory accusations. Others have expressed concern that criminal proceedings over offensive speech could discourage citizens from openly criticising political leaders.
Konadu has not been convicted of any offence, and the allegations against her remain subject to determination by the court.
Her bail means she may remain outside custody while the case continues, provided she satisfies all conditions imposed by the court and attends future proceedings.
The case has become another major test of how Ghana’s authorities and courts respond to controversial political content published on rapidly growing platforms such as TikTok. All attention will now turn to Konadu’s next court appearance as the prosecution prepares to advance its case.
