Kylian Mbappé has delivered a brutally honest assessment of France’s performance after Les Bleus suffered a painful 2-0 defeat to Spain in the 2026 FIFA World Cup semifinal.
France entered the highly anticipated contest hoping to reach a third consecutive World Cup final, but Spain controlled the match and successfully silenced a French attack that had looked dangerous throughout the tournament.
Mikel Oyarzabal opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the 22nd minute after Lamine Yamal drew a foul inside the area. Pedro Porro then doubled Spain’s advantage in the 58th minute, completing a clever attacking move involving Dani Olmo.
Mbappé, who had been one of France’s biggest performers during the competition, struggled to make his usual impact as Spain’s defenders denied him space and limited his opportunities in front of goal.
Speaking after the crushing elimination, the France captain admitted that his team failed to execute its game plan and allowed Spain far too much freedom to dictate the tempo.
According to Mbappé, Spain’s strength lies in its ability to control possession and patiently move the ball. He acknowledged that France made the task easier by failing to apply enough pressure, particularly in midfield.
“We weren’t at the level to go to the final,” Mbappé admitted after the match.
The Real Madrid superstar’s disappointment was evident. France possessed enough individual talent to trouble any opponent, but the team appeared unusually passive, disconnected and short of ideas when Spain took control.
Mbappé came close to finding a way back into the contest during the second half, but his deflected attempt narrowly missed the target. His late free kick also sailed over the crossbar as France’s hopes of producing a dramatic comeback disappeared.
Spain’s disciplined defensive performance ultimately proved too strong. The European champions prevented France’s dangerous attacking trio of Mbappé, Ousmane Dembélé and Michael Olise from finding their rhythm, securing another clean sheet on their road to the final.
France must now prepare for the third-place playoff, while Spain move one victory away from lifting their first World Cup trophy since 2010
