The Atlanta Falcons have been dealt a major defensive blow after the NFL suspended rising edge rusher James Pearce Jr. for the first eight games of the 2026 regular season for violating the league’s personal-conduct policy.
The punishment follows Pearce’s offseason arrest near Miami in February following an alleged domestic dispute involving his former girlfriend, WNBA player Rickea Jackson. Pearce faced felony charges including aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, fleeing and eluding police and resisting an officer with violence, along with a misdemeanor stalking charge.
Pearce later entered a pretrial intervention program that could lead to the charges being dismissed if he successfully satisfies the required conditions.
Now, regardless of how the legal process ultimately concludes, the NFL has delivered its own punishment.
The suspension means the Falcons will be without one of their most dangerous young pass rushers for half of the regular-season schedule. Pearce will become eligible to return in Week 9 when Atlanta faces the Cincinnati Bengals in Madrid.
His absence could hardly come at a worse time for Atlanta.
The Falcons are already dealing with the loss of fellow pass rusher Jalon Walker, who suffered a torn ACL during training camp and is expected to miss the entire 2026 season.
Pearce emerged as one of Atlanta’s brightest defensive talents during his rookie campaign. Selected 26th overall in the 2025 NFL Draft, he recorded 10.5 sacks and finished as a finalist for AP NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year honors.
Those numbers made him a major piece of Atlanta’s plans entering his second season, but the eight-game suspension suddenly forces the Falcons to find another source of pressure off the edge.
For Pearce, the setback interrupts what appeared to be a rapidly rising NFL career. For Atlanta, it creates another major challenge before the regular season has even begun.
Eight games. Half a season. And now the Falcons must find a way to survive without one of their most explosive young defenders.
