A Mississippi grand jury has decided not to file criminal charges in connection with the mysterious death of 18-year-old Nolan Xavier Wells, bringing the current criminal proceedings to an end after weeks of intense public attention and demands for justice.
The decision, announced on September 21, 2026, follows an extensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding the teenager’s death during a Fourth of July outing with friends on Horn Island, off the Mississippi Gulf Coast.
Wells disappeared on July 4 after traveling to the island with a group of friends. His body was discovered in the water two days later, raising questions about what happened during the trip and why he never returned with the others.
The case attracted nationwide attention as Wells’ family sought answers about his final moments and the circumstances surrounding his death.
A grand jury consisting of 23 members reviewed testimony from 43 witnesses, cellphone records, GPS information, video footage and other evidence before unanimously deciding that the available evidence did not justify criminal charges against anyone involved in the outing.
The grand jury concluded that the circumstances surrounding Wells’ death were consistent with drowning. However, both the state medical examiner and an independent forensic pathologist hired by the family classified the official cause and manner of death as undetermined.
Despite the grand jury’s decision, Wells’ family remains dissatisfied with the outcome.
Civil rights attorney Ben Crump, who represents the family, maintains that significant questions remain unanswered, particularly regarding injuries discovered on the teenager’s body.
The family has renewed its call for an independent federal investigation and greater transparency concerning the evidence gathered during the investigation.
Although the current criminal proceedings have ended without an indictment, the grand jury indicated that the matter could be reconsidered if credible new evidence emerges.
For Wells’ grieving family, the legal decision has not brought an end to their search for answers about what happened to their loved one.
