A major drug investigation has rocked Penn State University after authorities charged 13 current or former students over their alleged involvement in a cocaine-trafficking operation linked to two fraternities.
Pennsylvania Attorney General Dave Sunday announced the charges following a lengthy investigation involving the Delta Upsilon and Sigma Chi fraternities. One additional defendant — the father of a former student — was also charged, bringing the total number of people facing charges to 14.
Prosecutors allege the operation was active primarily during 2023 and 2024, with cocaine brought into State College from suppliers in New York and Philadelphia before being divided, packaged and distributed largely to Penn State students.
Authorities identified Agostino Abbatiello and Thomas Robinson as alleged major suppliers in the operation. Investigators claim large quantities of cocaine were regularly obtained before being prepared for resale at locations connected to Sigma Chi and Delta Upsilon.
Perhaps one of the most disturbing allegations involves fraternity pledges. Attorney General Sunday said investigators uncovered evidence suggesting some pledges were expected to help cut and package cocaine, allegedly making the activity part of their introduction into fraternity life.
Four defendants are facing felony charges including corrupt organizations, conspiracy and dealing in proceeds of unlawful activity. Another defendant faces felony conspiracy and related allegations, while several others have been charged with misdemeanor drug possession and paraphernalia offenses.
The 14th defendant, identified as the father of one of the accused students, faces allegations of tampering with evidence and hindering investigators after authorities say he attempted to conceal drugs and cash.
Penn State responded by placing Delta Upsilon on interim suspension while launching its own review. The university said Sigma Chi is not currently a recognized Penn State organization and operates outside university oversight.
The allegations have sent shockwaves through the university community as investigators describe what they believe was a coordinated drug network operating around student social circles.
All defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
