The political confrontation between Ghana Gold Board CEO Sammy Gyamfi and Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has taken another dramatic turn, with Gyamfi delivering a fiery response to warnings that GoldBod officials could face tough bail conditions in the future.
Speaking at the Government Accountability Series on Wednesday, August 19, 2026, Gyamfi dismissed Afenyo-Markin’s warning and insisted he would not be intimidated by threats of possible prosecution or imprisonment.
The GoldBod CEO declared that he would only “go to prison in his brain” and have “onerous bail terms in his brain,” portraying the Minority Leader’s prediction as something that existed only in his imagination.
His response followed comments by Afenyo-Markin at a press conference on August 18, where the Minority Leader warned that the current leadership of GoldBod could face “scary” bail conditions if the New Patriotic Party returns to power. Afenyo-Markin linked his warning to allegations of about GH¢22 billion in losses, claims that have become a major source of political controversy.
Gyamfi, however, rejected the portrayal of GoldBod’s performance and accused his political opponents of using intimidation rather than facts.
He also defended the institution’s record, arguing that GoldBod had made significant progress in strengthening Ghana’s gold value chain and increasing local refining. During his address, he contrasted the current situation with the previous administration, saying more of Ghana’s purchased gold was now being refined locally.
The GoldBod CEO further suggested that Afenyo-Markin’s comments should be treated more as political comedy than serious parliamentary criticism, while maintaining that he was confident the institution’s results would eventually speak for themselves.
The latest exchange adds another layer to the increasingly heated battle between the NDC administration and the NPP Minority over GoldBod’s operations, alleged financial losses and accountability.
With both sides trading sharp accusations, the GoldBod controversy is rapidly becoming one of Ghana’s fiercest political and economic debates and neither Sammy Gyamfi nor Afenyo-Markin appears ready to back down.
