Shocking Twist: Chicago Man Spends 20 Years in Prison for Murder Before His Identical Twin Brother Confesses to the Killing

Email 3

In an extraordinary case that stunned the American justice system, a Chicago man spent nearly two decades behind bars for murder before his identical twin brother stepped forward and confessed to being the person responsible for the deadly shooting.

Kevin Dugar, who maintained his innocence throughout his imprisonment, was finally released in January 2022 after serving nearly 20 years of a 54-year prison sentence.

The shocking case dates back to 2003, when a shooting in Chicago’s Uptown neighborhood left Antwan Carter dead and another person injured.

Investigators identified Dugar as the suspected gunman, leading to his conviction for first-degree murder in 2005. However, a stunning confession years later would cast serious doubt on whether authorities had imprisoned the right twin.

Twin Brother Breaks Silence and Confesses

In 2013, Dugar’s identical twin brother, Karl Smith, who was already serving a 99-year prison sentence for an unrelated violent crime, wrote a letter admitting responsibility for the killing.

Smith later testified in court in 2016, maintaining that he was the person who fired the fatal shots.
The confession raised troubling questions about mistaken identity, particularly because the identical brothers reportedly had a history of impersonating each other.

Despite the confession, Dugar’s hopes of freedom suffered another setback in 2018 when a judge questioned Smith’s credibility and rejected his request for a new trial.

Prosecutors also challenged the confession, suggesting Smith had little to lose because he was already serving an extremely lengthy sentence.

Freedom After Nearly Two Decades

Following years of legal challenges, Dugar’s attorneys, working alongside wrongful-conviction advocates, successfully pushed for another review of the case.

On January 25, 2022, Dugar was released from custody after a judge granted him bond pending further proceedings.
His release marked an emotional turning point after almost 20 years of imprisonment.

However, his release did not automatically overturn his murder conviction, and prosecutors still had the option of pursuing another trial.

A Case That Raises Serious Questions About Justice

The extraordinary story highlights the devastating consequences of possible wrongful convictions and the complexities of criminal cases involving identical twins.

For Dugar, the confession brought a long-awaited opportunity to rebuild his life outside prison walls.
The case remains a powerful reminder of how disputed eyewitness identification, contested evidence and delayed confessions can affect the pursuit of justice.

Editor’s note: This is a historical case, not a newly reported 2026 incident. The release and confession details were reported in January 2022.
