A heartbreaking story surrounding Nigerian footballer Chinedu Ozor has taken a dramatic turn after his club, Katsina United, dismissed viral reports claiming the defender astonishingly regained signs of life after being declared dead.

Ozor collapsed during Katsina United’s pre-season friendly against Niger Tornadoes at the Muhammadu Dikko Stadium in Katsina on Tuesday, August 11, sending players, officials and supporters into shock. He was rushed for medical attention but was later pronounced dead.

However, hours after news of his death spread across Nigerian football, sensational reports emerged claiming Ozor had shown signs of movement before being taken to the mortuary.

Some reports alleged that his hand moved, sparking claims that the footballer had “come back to life” and had subsequently been placed on oxygen as medical personnel attempted to stabilize him. The remarkable reports quickly travelled across social media and international sports outlets.

But Katsina United has now stepped forward to set the record straight.

In an official clarification, the club said Ozor never regained consciousness, explaining that his devastated family had requested additional medical confirmation because they desperately hoped he could still be alive.

According to the club, that heartbreaking moment of hope was misinterpreted and eventually transformed into the viral story suggesting the defender had awakened after being pronounced dead.

Katsina United stressed that despite efforts to save him, Ozor passed away and appealed to the public and media to stop circulating unverified claims that could deepen the pain of his grieving family.

The defender had only recently joined Katsina United as the club prepared for the new 2026/27 Nigeria Premier Football League season. His previous clubs included Kano Pillars and Heartland.

What initially appeared to be an unbelievable football miracle has therefore ended in tragedy.

As Nigerian football mourns, the focus now shifts away from the sensational mortuary claims and toward remembering Chinedu Ozor, whose sudden death has left his family, teammates and the wider football community devastated.
