Emmanuel Crawford was only three years old when poverty changed the course of his childhood.
Born in Ghana, Crawford has said his biological parents were struggling so severely that they could not adequately provide for their family. He was eventually sold into forced labor in Ghana’s fishing industry, becoming one of the children trafficked to work around Lake Volta.
Instead of spending his early years playing and attending school, Crawford found himself working on fishing boats. He later recalled being so young that one of his responsibilities was using a container to scoop water from leaking wooden canoes to prevent them from sinking. Lake Volta has long been associated with concerns about child trafficking and forced labor in Ghana’s fishing sector, where vulnerable children can be exploited because of severe economic hardship.
Crawford’s life eventually changed after he was rescued with help from the Touch A Life Foundation, an organization that works with children affected by forced labor and exploitation in Ghana. He was placed in the organization’s care before meeting Stan and Audrey Crawford, an American couple from Grove, Oklahoma.
After completing the adoption process, the couple brought Emmanuel to the United States, giving him an opportunity to begin a dramatically different chapter.
Years later, Crawford emerged as a standout American football player at Grove High School in Oklahoma. During his senior season, he rushed for 2,304 yards and 36 touchdowns and was named the 2022–23 Gatorade Oklahoma Football Player of the Year.

Crawford has also remained connected to the organization involved in his rescue, volunteering with Touch A Life Foundation to support efforts aimed at helping other children facing forced labor.
