The cause of death of Grammy-nominated hip-hop producer Tay Keith has been revealed, three months after the hitmaker was found dead inside his Nashville apartment.

Tay Keith, whose real name was Brytavious Lakeith Chambers, died from the toxic effects of drugs, according to information attributed to the Nashville Medical Examiner’s Office. He was only 29 years old.

The medical examiner reportedly found ketamine and mitragynine in his system. Mitragynine is an active chemical compound found in kratom, a plant that acts on opioid receptors in the brain.

Additional reports said nicotine and ethanol were also detected, while mild coronary artery disease was noted during the examination. The exact circumstances surrounding how the substances entered his system have not been publicly established.

Tay Keith was discovered unresponsive at his Nashville residence on June 18, 2026, after authorities were called to conduct a welfare check. At the time, Metro Nashville Police said there were no indications of foul play, while his cause of death remained pending further investigation.

His sudden passing sent shockwaves across the hip-hop industry.

Tay Keith rose to worldwide fame through his signature production style and became one of the most recognizable producers of his generation. He earned major attention for producing and co-producing records including Travis Scott’s “Sicko Mode,” Drake’s “Nonstop” and BlocBoy JB’s “Look Alive.”
