For decades, Ghanaians knew one of the country’s most prominent former leaders as Jerry John Rawlings, popularly called J.J. Rawlings. But behind the famous name is a fascinating historical detail: Rawlings was not originally his surname. His surname was John.
Jerry Rawlings was born in Accra on June 22, 1947, to Ghanaian mother Victoria Agbotui and Scottish father James Ramsey John. Historical accounts record his original name as Jerry Rawlings John, with “John” inherited from his father.
So how did Jerry Rawlings John become Jerry John Rawlings?
The change appears to have occurred when the young Rawlings applied to join the Ghana Armed Forces in 1967.
Historian Kevin Shillington’s 1992 book, Ghana and the Rawlings Factor, is cited in academic research explaining that when Rawlings signed his name as Jerry Rawlings John, Air Force administrators apparently interpreted “John” as another Christian name. They consequently recorded “Rawlings” as his surname, effectively rearranging his name into the form that would later become famous: Jerry John Rawlings.
Rawlings himself later confirmed the unusual story.
During a radio interview, the former president explained that his name had originally been Jerry Rawlings John and that his father was James Ramsey John. According to Rawlings, when the Armed Forces responded to his application, officials had switched the positions of “John” and “Rawlings.” Rather than challenge the change and potentially complicate his ambition of becoming a military pilot, he allowed the new arrangement to remain.
The Washington Post similarly reported after his death that Rawlings was born Jerry Rawlings John and that his last name, John, disappeared from the official naming arrangement when he entered Air Force training.
The Ghana News Agency has also documented the transformation from Jeremiah Rawlings John to Jerry Rawlings John and eventually Jerry John Rawlings, describing the change as resulting from the military swapping his original surname and middle name.
What may have started as an administrative misunderstanding eventually produced one of the most recognizable names in Ghana’s modern history.
The man remembered worldwide as Jerry John Rawlings was therefore born with John as his surname and not Rawlings.
