A routine evening commute ended in tragedy in Brooklyn, New York, after 57-year-old Ghanaian Yaw Boahene died in a horrific subway accident when a shopping bag he was carrying became trapped in the doors of a moving train.
The fatal incident happened Monday evening at the Utica Avenue subway station in Bedford-Stuyvesant, as Boahene was getting off an A train around 6 p.m. Police said his shopping bag became caught between the closing doors before the train began moving.
Witness accounts indicate Boahene was unable to free himself as the train pulled away from the platform. He was dragged along before ending up on the tracks, turning what should have been an ordinary journey into a devastating scene witnessed by passengers and commuters.
Emergency responders rushed to the station after receiving a 911 call. Officers found Boahene unconscious and unresponsive on the tracks, and emergency medical personnel pronounced him dead at the scene.
Authorities said there is currently no indication of criminal activity, while the circumstances surrounding the accident remain under investigation. The New York City Office of Chief Medical Examiner is expected to determine the official cause of death.

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority said the train involved in the incident was inspected afterward, with no mechanical faults reported. The train operator and conductor were temporarily removed from service in accordance with standard procedure following a fatal incident.
Boaheneās heartbreaking death has once again drawn attention to the dangers posed when personal belongings, clothing or other objects become trapped in subway doors.
Similar fatal incidents have happened previously in New York City. In 2022, a 20-year-old commuter died after his clothing or backpack became caught in the doors of a subway train at Columbus Circle.
For Boahene, an ordinary Monday evening journey ended in unimaginable tragedy, leaving another painful reminder of how quickly a routine commute can turn fatal.
