Atlanta United have made a major statement in Major League Soccer, officially signing Switzerland international striker Breel Embolo from French Ligue 1 side Stade Rennais.
The Five Stripes confirmed the arrival of the 29-year-old forward on August 23, handing him a contract through the 2029-30 season. Embolo will occupy a Designated Player and international roster spot, pending receipt of his International Transfer Certificate and P-1 Visa.
The move brings a proven European and international goalscorer to Mercedes-Benz Stadium, giving Atlanta United another major attacking weapon as the club looks to strengthen its frontline under head coach Tata Martino.
Embolo arrives in Atlanta with an impressive résumé. The powerful striker has registered 100 goals and 66 assists in 380 professional appearances, having competed in Switzerland, Germany and France. His European journey has included spells with FC Basel, Schalke 04, Borussia Mönchengladbach, AS Monaco and Stade Rennais.
During the 2025-26 campaign with Rennes, Embolo scored 10 goals and provided three assists in 34 appearances across all competitions, further demonstrating the finishing ability Atlanta will hope he can reproduce in MLS.
His international experience is equally impressive. Embolo has scored 26 goals in 92 appearances for Switzerland and has featured at three FIFA World Cups. He helped Switzerland reach the quarterfinals of the 2026 World Cup, recording two goals and two assists during the tournament.
Atlanta United sporting director Chris Henderson highlighted Embolo’s goalscoring ability, link-up play and work rate as key qualities expected to strengthen the team’s center-forward position.
Reports have valued the transfer at around $18 million, potentially making it one of the biggest incoming deals in MLS history.
Now the stage is set. Mercedes-Benz Stadium has a new star striker, and Atlanta United supporters will be hoping Breel Embolo can turn his European pedigree into goals, victories and unforgettable nights for the Five Stripes.
