A routine fishing trip turned into a terrifying battle at sea after a Filipino fisherman reeled in an octopus—only for the eight-armed creature to latch onto his face and refuse to let go.

The dramatic encounter, captured on video and now circulating widely online, happened off Puerto Princesa in Palawan, Philippines, on July 10. Fisherman Jesser Cervantes found himself in an unexpected fight after the octopus he had caught wrapped its arms around his head and face.

Footage of the bizarre struggle shows Cervantes desperately trying to peel the animal’s powerful suckers from his skin. But every attempt to remove one section appeared to be met with another tentacle holding firmly in place.

At one tense point, the octopus reportedly covered Cervantes’ mouth, adding urgency to his efforts to free himself. With the creature refusing to loosen its grip, the fisherman eventually grabbed a piece of bamboo and used it in an effort to dislodge the stubborn catch.

After a prolonged struggle, Cervantes finally managed to pull the octopus away from his face. Rather than keeping his troublesome catch, he lowered the creature back into the water.

Cervantes later described the encounter as extremely difficult, saying the octopus had nearly injured his face.

The extraordinary footage quickly gained attention online, with viewers stunned by the strength of the relatively small sea creature. Another report of the viral video noted how difficult it was for the fisherman to separate the tentacles because of the octopus’ suction cups.

Octopuses are famous for their flexible bodies, intelligence and powerful suckers, which allow them to maintain an impressive grip on surfaces—and, in Cervantes’ case, an unfortunate fisherman.

What started as another catch of the day quickly became a memorable warning: sometimes the catch fights back.
