A police officer has been killed following an alleged mob attack at Gindabour in the Sawla District of Ghana’s Savannah Region, triggering a major security response and the arrest of dozens of suspects.
The Ghana Police Service has identified the deceased officer as General Constable Redeemer Owusu. The incident reportedly occurred on Wednesday, September 16, 2026, while Owusu and his colleagues were carrying out highway patrol duties along the Gindabour-Kenkyen community road.
According to preliminary information released by police, officers noticed a motorbike rider suddenly divert into the bush after seeing their patrol vehicle.
The patrol team reportedly became suspicious and approached the area from another direction, where they discovered the rider lying unconscious on a bush road.
Police said the officers picked up the man and attempted to transport him to a hospital, but he died before reaching the medical facility.
News of the rider’s death reportedly spread through the community, after which a group of people allegedly attacked the police officers.

During the violent confrontation, General Constable Owusu was killed. Other officers sustained various injuries, while the police patrol vehicle was also damaged.
Both the deceased police officer and the motorbike rider have since been transported to the Damongo Morgue for preservation and autopsy as investigations continue.
Police have now arrested 36 suspects in connection with the attack. Authorities say the suspects are assisting investigators and are expected to be taken before court.
The Inspector-General of Police has also deployed investigators, intelligence personnel and reinforcement teams from several surrounding communities to Gindabour to strengthen security and maintain law and order.
The Savannah Regional Police Command has condemned the killing and vowed to pursue everyone found responsible.
The investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to establish the full circumstances surrounding both the motorbike rider’s death and the deadly attack on the police officers.
