A terrifying high-rise fire in Berlin, Germany, produced a dramatic moment of survival after a woman was forced to jump from the 11th floor into a fire brigade ladder basket when rescuers could not reach her window.
The frightening incident unfolded Friday morning in Berlin’s Friedrichshain district, where a fire broke out in a 21-story residential building on Straße der Pariser Kommune, near Ostbahnhof. The blaze reportedly started on a balcony on the 11th floor before quickly spreading into the apartment and reaching the floor above.
Video from the scene captured the extraordinary rescue as thick smoke poured from the building.
According to the Berlin Fire Brigade, the woman was already sitting on a window ledge when firefighters arrived, with black smoke behind her. The turntable ladder could only reach approximately the ninth floor, leaving a dangerous gap between the stranded woman and the rescue basket below.
With conditions becoming increasingly dangerous, the woman had to make a terrifying decision.
She jumped.
Firefighters positioned inside the small aerial basket managed to catch her after the leap. A fire department spokesperson described the rescue as extremely close to disaster, saying the situation had been balanced “on a knife’s edge.” The woman suffered only minor injuries.
The high-rise blaze injured at least 13 people, with five transported to hospitals by ambulance. Emergency crews also assessed and cared for 113 people affected by the incident.
More than 130 firefighters responded to the scene, while a rescue helicopter was placed on standby but ultimately was not required. Firefighters also deployed inflatable jumping cushions as a precaution, though they were not used.

The fire was eventually brought under control later that morning, followed by extensive ventilation and inspection work as smoke had spread throughout large sections of the building.
The dramatic footage has since captured attention online, with viewers stunned by both the woman’s courage and the firefighters’ precision.
What could easily have ended in tragedy instead became an incredible story of survival one leap, one small rescue basket and firefighters waiting below at exactly the right moment.
