The United States has delivered a major military support package valued at approximately $4 million to the Ghana Armed Forces, strengthening the country’s ability to protect its borders, territorial waters and national security interests.
The donation, comprising 84 pallets of military and intelligence equipment, was officially handed over on Wednesday, July 22, 2026, at the 48 Engineer Regiment in Teshie, Accra. The package was presented by the United States Embassy on behalf of the US government.
Among the advanced items delivered were unmanned aerial systems, commonly known as drones, night-vision goggles, GPS devices, radios, radar systems, antennas and monitoring displays. The shipment also included medical supplies, protective equipment, body armour, computers, tablets and spare parts.
The Ghana Army received protective gear, compasses, communication devices and surveillance equipment designed to improve operations on land. The Ghana Navy was supplied with radar and monitoring systems to strengthen coastal surveillance, along with specialised boarding equipment for its Special Boats Squadron.
Ghana’s intelligence services also received computers, tablets and training materials to support intelligence gathering and capacity-building programmes.
Speaking during the handover ceremony, US Chargé d’Affaires Rolf Olson explained that the equipment had been carefully selected to address the specific operational needs of the Army, Navy and intelligence services.
Rather than providing a general collection of items, the United States reportedly designed the package to build Ghana’s long-term defence capabilities and improve the country’s response to terrorism, maritime crime and other emerging security threats across West Africa.
Chief of the Naval Staff Rear Admiral Godwin Livinus Bessing described the donation as another important milestone in the long-standing defence relationship between Ghana and the United States.
He said the equipment would improve troop readiness, intelligence operations, reconnaissance, border protection and maritime security. He also assured the United States that the items would be deployed responsibly for their intended purposes.
The latest multimillion-dollar donation builds on previous US assistance to Ghana, including armoured personnel carriers, military trucks, maritime equipment, technical training and logistical support.
With security concerns growing across the Sahel and the wider West African region, the advanced equipment represents a significant boost to Ghana’s efforts to prevent cross-border terrorism, combat piracy and safeguard its territorial integrity.
