The heartbreaking murder of 23-year-old Ghanaian-American Alexis Zina Walls has returned to the spotlight after her common-law husband admitted killing her and was sentenced to decades behind bars.
Alexis was shot and killed inside her home in Bryan, Texas, on February 7, 2025, in a case that shocked her family and community.
According to police and court records, Brandon Michael Dickerson called 911 at approximately 12:40 a.m. and reported that he had killed Alexis. Officers responding to the East 18th Street residence found her dead from multiple gunshot wounds.
Investigators said Dickerson later admitted that he had shot Alexis 15 times, claiming he suspected she was being unfaithful.
Even more disturbing, the couple’s 18-month-old son was inside the home during the killing. Authorities said the child was not physically injured. Court records identified Alexis as Dickerson’s common-law wife.
Nearly one year after the killing, Dickerson returned to court and admitted responsibility.
On February 3, 2026, he pleaded guilty to murder before Judge Kyle Hawthorne in Brazos County’s 85th District Court. The judge sentenced him to 50 years in prison, the maximum punishment imposed under the plea arrangement.
Alexis, born on October 9, 2001, was remembered by prosecutors as a friendly, kind and thoughtful young mother whose personality brought happiness to those around her. Her family is now raising her young son and preserving the memory of the mother he lost at such an early age.
The Brazos County District Attorney’s Office emphasized that Alexis’ life should not be defined solely by the violent way it ended, describing her instead as a loving mother, daughter and friend.
Dickerson’s attorney said following the guilty plea that his client accepted responsibility for his actions and the punishment handed down by the court.
For Alexis’ loved ones, however, the 50-year sentence cannot restore the young mother whose life was taken at only 23.
Her death has also become another devastating example of the potentially deadly consequences of intimate-partner violence.
