Manchester United produced an impressive second-half comeback to defeat Atletico Madrid 2-1 in a competitive pre-season friendly at the Strawberry Arena in Stockholm.

Michael Carrick’s side recovered from an early setback, with Bryan Mbeumo scoring twice after the break to secure victory and lift the Snapdragon Cup.

Atletico Madrid made the perfect start when Arnau Ortiz opened the scoring inside five minutes. After receiving possession from a corner, Ortiz attempted a cross from outside the penalty area that curled beyond goalkeeper Tom Heaton and into the far corner.

Despite falling behind, United remained composed and gradually took control of the contest. Mason Mount played an influential role in midfield, while youngsters Shea Lacey, Leny Yoro and Ayden Heaven delivered encouraging performances against Diego Simeone’s side.

The Red Devils finally found their equalizer in the 53rd minute. Lacey’s quick movement caused problems inside the Atletico penalty area, forcing Jorge Castillo into a foul. Mbeumo stepped forward and calmly converted the resulting penalty to make it 1-1.

United completed the turnaround in the 74th minute following a dangerous run from Jack Fletcher. The youngster drove down the right before delivering a cross that took a deflection and fell kindly for Mbeumo, who reacted quickly to score from close range.

Atletico pushed forward in search of an equalizer and came painfully close on two occasions. Morten Hjulmand and Rodrigo Mendoza both struck the woodwork as United’s defence survived a tense finish.

Carrick also handed 15-year-old JJ Gabriel his senior debut during the closing stages, adding another memorable moment to an encouraging afternoon for the Premier League club.

Although the result will not count toward the competitive season, United’s energy, determination and attacking improvement will give supporters confidence. For Mbeumo, his decisive brace demonstrated exactly why he could become an important figure in Carrick’s plans for the new campaign.
