The stage is set in Buenos Aires as Ghanaian featherweight sensation John “Expensive Boxer” Laryea arrives in Argentina ready for what could become the most defining night of his professional boxing career.
Laryea will step into hostile territory on Saturday, August 15, 2026, when he battles Argentina’s Adrian Maximiliano Robledo at Casino Buenos Aires in a crucial WBA featherweight world-title eliminator.
The undefeated Ghanaian travelled from Accra alongside his longtime trainer Lawrence Carl Lokko, who has supervised an intense training camp aimed at preparing his fighter for the pressure of facing a dangerous opponent in front of an Argentine crowd.
Laryea enters the showdown with an impressive professional record of 17 victories, no defeats and one draw, including 13 knockouts. Robledo, meanwhile, carries a 13-1 record and will have the advantage of fighting in his home country.
But Laryea is not travelling thousands of miles simply to participate.
Victory in Buenos Aires would strengthen the 24-year-old Ghanaian’s position in the WBA featherweight picture and push him significantly closer to the world-title opportunity he has been chasing throughout his rise.
Before leaving Ghana, Laryea also received words of encouragement from legendary former world champion Azumah Nelson, who advised him to remain disciplined, composed and confident when fighting away from home. Nelson stressed the importance of following the game plan and embracing the responsibility of representing Ghana on the international stage.
The assignment will certainly not be easy.
Robledo has won four consecutive fights heading into the clash and most recently defeated Diego Alberto Ruiz by unanimous decision in May. His home advantage means Laryea may need a commanding performance to silence both his opponent and the Buenos Aires crowd.
Laryea, however, has already shown he can perform outside Ghana. He previously impressed on American soil and has built his reputation around aggressive pressure, punching power and confidence inside the ring.
Now the preparation is almost complete.
