American R&B superstar Chris Brown has pleaded guilty to affray over a violent confrontation at a London nightclub, bringing a dramatic change to a criminal case that had been heading toward trial.
The 37-year-old singer entered his guilty plea at Southwark Crown Court on Friday, July 24, 2026. His vocal coach and co-defendant, Omololu Akinlolu, also admitted the same offence. Both men are scheduled to be sentenced on October 26.
The case arose from an incident at Tape nightclub in London’s Mayfair district during the early hours of February 19, 2023.
According to prosecutors, Brown approached music producer Abraham Diaw inside the crowded venue and struck him twice on the head with a glass bottle. Akinlolu then joined the confrontation and punched Diaw before the injured producer was reportedly chased, pushed to the ground and kicked. He later received hospital treatment for injuries to his head and knee.
By pleading guilty to affray, Brown admitted using or threatening unlawful violence in circumstances that could cause a person of reasonable firmness to fear for their safety.
More serious charges connected to the incident—including attempted grievous bodily harm, assault occasioning actual bodily harm and possession of an offensive weapon—were dropped following the guilty pleas.
Brown had previously denied the allegations and was expected to stand trial later in 2026. His guilty plea now removes the need for that trial and places his immediate legal future in the hands of the sentencing judge.
The award-winning musician was arrested in Manchester on May 15, 2025, after returning to Britain for his world tour. He was later released under strict bail conditions after providing a £5 million security payment, allowing him to continue performing internationally.
The Crown Prosecution Service described the nightclub incident as an unprovoked and vicious attack, stressing that celebrity status does not place anyone above the law.
Brown was released on bail again after Friday’s hearing and must return for sentencing. The offence of affray carries a maximum prison sentence of three years, although the punishment imposed will be determined by the court after considering the circumstances of the case.
The guilty plea marks a serious legal setback for one of R&B’s most commercially successful performers and leaves uncertainty hanging over him ahead of the October sentencing hearing.
