Deportation Drama: Ghanaian Samuel Sey Detained by ICE After Publicly Backing Trump’s Immigration Crackdown

Email 13

Ghanaian-born Christian blogger and conservative political commentator Samuel Sey has been detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in a dramatic development that has sparked widespread debate over President Donald Trump’s immigration crackdown.

The 39-year-old writer, who previously defended the Trump administration’s aggressive deportation policies, was arrested at Columbus International Airport in Ohio on Wednesday, October 21, 2026.

Following his arrest, Sey was transferred to Butler County Jail in Hamilton, Ohio, where authorities placed him on an immigration hold.

According to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Sey entered the United States legally in 2022 but allegedly remained beyond his authorized period of admission.

Federal officials further disclosed that the Ghanaian commentator had no pending immigration applications and had accepted voluntary departure, meaning he would leave the country rather than remain in detention indefinitely.

However, his supporters have challenged the government’s account, suggesting that an administrative or immigration paperwork error may have contributed to his detention.

From Supporting Deportations to Facing Removal

Sey’s arrest has attracted particular attention because of his outspoken support for tougher immigration enforcement.

Through his blog, Slow to Write, and appearances on conservative media platforms, Sey has repeatedly defended immigration restrictions, arguing that deporting individuals who violate immigration laws is consistent with Christian principles.

His previous public statements supporting ICE have resurfaced online, generating mixed reactions among social media users.

While critics have highlighted the irony of his situation, supporters insist that his detention should not automatically be interpreted as evidence of deliberate immigration violations.

Family and Supporters Fight for His Release

Born in Ghana, Sey relocated to Canada during his childhood before eventually settling in the United States, where he married and established a family.

His detention has reportedly left his wife and three young children facing an uncertain situation.

Several conservative Christian commentators have publicly expressed solidarity with the family, while supporters have organized fundraising efforts to assist them.

Despite the controversy, publicly available jail records did not list any criminal charges against Sey.

As of October 26, 2026, federal authorities maintain that he will remain in ICE custody pending his departure from the United States.

It remains unclear whether he will ultimately return to Ghana or Canada.

The unfolding immigration case continues to generate discussion about the reach of America’s immigration enforcement policies, even among those who have publicly championed them.
