Former FBI Director James Comey Indicted, Arrest Warrant Issued Over Alleged Death Threat Against President Donald Trump

Former FBI Director James Comey has found himself at the center of a major legal and political storm after a federal grand jury indicted him over allegations that he threatened the life of U.S. President Donald Trump.

The indictment, announced on April 28, 2026, in the Eastern District of North Carolina, triggered widespread attention, with authorities also issuing an arrest warrant for the former head of America’s top federal law enforcement agency.

The controversy stems from a social media post Comey shared on May 15, 2025, featuring seashells arranged to display the numbers “86 47.”

Federal prosecutors argue that the combination carried a threatening message directed at Trump, the 47th president of the United States.

The number “86” is commonly associated with removing or getting rid of something, although it can also carry a more sinister meaning involving killing someone.

Prosecutors maintain that Comey’s post constituted a serious threat against the president, an allegation that has sparked intense debate over political expression and criminal responsibility.

Two Federal Charges Against Comey

According to the U.S. Department of Justice, Comey faces two federal counts involving an alleged threat against the president and transmitting a threatening communication across state lines.

Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche condemned threats against elected officials, emphasizing that threats of political violence must be treated seriously.

FBI Director Kash Patel also criticized Comey’s actions, arguing that someone who previously led the FBI should have understood the potential consequences of publishing such a message.

Comey Denies Allegations as Legal Battle Intensifies

Comey has strongly rejected the accusations, insisting that his social media post was never intended to encourage violence against Trump.

His legal team has vowed to challenge the charges, raising concerns about free speech and what it considers politically motivated prosecution.

On April 29, Comey voluntarily surrendered to authorities, briefly entered custody and appeared before a federal judge in Virginia. He was subsequently released without conditions.

The case adds another dramatic chapter to the bitter relationship between Trump and Comey, whom Trump dismissed as FBI director in 2017.

As the legal battle continues, the central question remains whether Comey’s controversial social media message constituted a genuine criminal threat or protected political expression.
