Ghanaian-raised financial executive Peter Akwaboah has risen to one of the most powerful positions in America’s housing finance industry, leading Fannie Mae, a company that manages more than $4 trillion in assets and plays a critical role in helping millions of Americans access mortgage financing.
Akwaboah currently serves as Acting Chief Executive Officer and Chief Operating Officer of Fannie Mae, placing him at the center of an enormous financial machine connected to homeownership, mortgage lending and the broader United States economy.
The scale is staggering. Fannie Mae reported a $4.1 trillion guaranty book of business at the end of the second quarter of 2026, illustrating the enormous housing-finance portfolio under the company’s leadership. The company also recorded $4 billion in net income for the quarter and increased its net worth to $116.5 billion.
For Akwaboah, the journey to the top of corporate America has been decades in the making.
Born in the United Kingdom to Ghanaian parents and raised in Ghana before returning to Britain for higher education, Akwaboah built his career through some of the biggest names in global finance and technology.
Before joining Fannie Mae, he worked at Morgan Stanley, where he served as Managing Director, Chief Operating Officer for Technology and Head of Innovation. His career also includes senior leadership experience at the Royal Bank of Scotland, Deutsche Bank, KPMG and IBM.
His rise has now placed a Ghana-connected executive at the helm of an institution deeply embedded in the American housing market.
During the second quarter of 2026 alone, Fannie Mae provided approximately $125 billion in liquidity to the U.S. mortgage market, supporting around 417,000 home purchases, refinancings and rental units. Nearly 110,000 first-time homebuyers were also supported during the period.
While the more than $4 trillion figure represents assets managed by Fannie Mae rather than Akwaboah’s personal wealth, his leadership position gives him significant responsibility within one of America’s most influential housing-finance institutions.
For many Ghanaians at home and abroad, his remarkable journey represents another example of Ghanaian talent reaching the highest levels of international business.
From growing up in Ghana to occupying the executive suite of an American financial powerhouse, Peter Akwaboah’s story is one of ambition, expertise and an extraordinary climb into the heart of the multitrillion-dollar U.S. housing industry.
