Ghana’s energy sector has been hit by heartbreaking news following the death of Dr. Dramani Bukari, Deputy Chief Executive of the National Petroleum Authority (NPA), who reportedly passed away in London after a short illness.
The sad news emerged on Tuesday, August 11, 2026, sending shockwaves through the petroleum industry and prompting tributes from colleagues, government officials and associates who knew and worked with the respected energy professional.
The NPA subsequently confirmed Dr. Bukari’s passing, describing his death as a significant loss to the Authority, Ghana’s downstream petroleum industry and everyone who had the opportunity to work alongside him. The institution also extended condolences to his family, loved ones and colleagues during what it described as a deeply painful period.
Reports indicate that Dr. Bukari died in London following a short illness. However, the specific nature of the illness and further circumstances surrounding his death have not been publicly disclosed. Dr. Bukari brought extensive knowledge to Ghana’s energy industry. According to his official NPA profile, he held an MSc in Energy Economics with distinction as well as a PhD in Sustainable Energy Technologies. His professional expertise included petroleum pricing, petroleum taxation, energy systems and sustainable energy development.
Before joining the NPA leadership team, he served as Director of Entrepreneurship, Partnerships and Investments at the Ghana Climate Innovation Centre, bringing experience in energy, climate innovation and investment into his role at the petroleum regulator.
His passing comes at a time when the NPA continues to play a central role in regulating Ghana’s downstream petroleum industry, making the loss particularly painful for colleagues within the institution. The Authority’s current leadership listing identifies Dr. Bukari as one of its Deputy Chief Executives.
