A desperate search for a missing 5-year-old boy with autism ended in unimaginable heartbreak after authorities found the child dead in a pond near his family’s Florida home.

The tragedy unfolded Friday, August 7, 2026, in Hillsborough County after a parent discovered that the young boy was no longer inside their apartment. According to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office, the child, who was described as nonverbal and autistic, had last been seen inside the home at approximately 5 a.m.

Authorities said that when the parent woke again around 9 a.m., the boy was missing and a hole was discovered in a screen at the back of the residence. After searching unsuccessfully, the parent contacted 911 at approximately 9:31 a.m.

What followed was a massive race against time.

More than 140 Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office units joined the search, including deputies, detectives, K-9 teams, drones, aviation personnel and members of the dive team. Sadly, shortly after 11 a.m., the search came to a devastating end when the child’s body was discovered in a nearby retention pond.

The pond was reportedly only about 25 to 30 feet from the damaged screened area behind the family’s apartment, making the discovery even more heartbreaking.

Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy, saying the entire sheriff’s office was grieving alongside the devastated family.

Authorities also revealed that this was the second incident involving a 5-year-old autistic child drowning at the same apartment complex within roughly two months.

The Sheriff’s Office said the investigation into the latest tragedy remains active.
