The former Juventus and AC Milan star is expected to take control of the Azzurri as Italy begins another painful rebuilding mission following its failure to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Pirlo is reportedly finalizing the termination of his contract with Dubai-based United FC before his appointment can be formally announced.
Reports suggest the 47-year-old will receive a contract running until the 2030 World Cup, giving him the enormous responsibility of restoring pride to a football nation that has now missed three consecutive editions of the tournament.
Pirlo emerged as Italy’s leading choice after high-profile approaches for Carlo Ancelotti and Pep Guardiola failed. Guardiola reportedly rejected the opportunity after discussions with Italian football officials, preferring to continue his break from management following his departure from Manchester City.
