Ghanaian political commentator Kevin Taylor has strongly challenged comedian Michael Blackson over his explosive accusations against the University of Ghana Medical Centre following the death of his 83-year-old mother.
Blackson recently described UGMC as one of Ghana’s worst hospitals, alleging that its medical team repeatedly misdiagnosed his mother, recommended expensive treatments and placed financial demands ahead of her wellbeing. He claimed his family spent approximately GH¢250,000 during her final month at the facility.
However, Taylor has urged the public not to condemn the hospital based solely on the grieving comedian’s account.
In a statement shared on Facebook on Wednesday, August 5, 2026, Taylor acknowledged the unbearable pain of losing a parent but insisted that serious accusations of medical negligence must be supported by credible evidence.
According to information Taylor said was gathered by his team, Blackson’s elderly mother was admitted to UGMC after experiencing sleep apnea and a severe chest infection that reportedly affected her breathing. Taylor claimed the seriousness of her condition required admission to the Intensive Care Unit, where medical specialists cared for her until she passed away.
The outspoken commentator argued that it would be unfair to blame UGMC for the death without a professional medical review proving that negligence or an incorrect diagnosis contributed to the tragedy.
Taylor also defended UGMC’s reputation, describing it as one of Ghana’s leading healthcare institutions. He warned that public allegations against a hospital could cause serious reputational damage and create unnecessary fear among patients before all sides of the story are heard.
His response also raised another disturbing dimension to the controversy. Taylor referred to an alleged confrontation involving a member of Blackson’s family and a nurse during the admission period. Blackson had previously disclosed that his sister was involved in a physical altercation with a male nurse, who later contacted the police.
Despite defending the medical facility, Taylor expressed sympathy to Blackson and his family while calling on UGMC to publicly respond and provide clarity regarding the treatment his mother received.
The heated exchange has now intensified public debate over healthcare costs, communication with patients’ relatives and medical accountability in Ghana.
UGMC had not issued a detailed public response to the specific allegations at the time of the reports. Until an independent medical investigation is conducted, the claims from both sides remain disputed accounts surrounding a deeply painful family loss.
