Norway has been plunged into mourning following the death of King Harald V, one of Europe’s longest-serving and most respected monarchs.
The Norwegian Royal Court announced that King Harald passed away peacefully at Oslo University Hospital Rikshospitalet on Friday, August 28, 2026, at 6:35 a.m. He was 89 years old.
His death brings to an end a remarkable reign spanning more than three decades.
King Harald had recently been hospitalized as his health deteriorated following complications including a bacterial infection. His condition became increasingly serious in the days before his passing.
Harald became King of Norway in 1991, succeeding his father, King Olav V. During his 35 years on the throne, he became known for helping modernize Norway’s monarchy while maintaining a strong connection with the Norwegian people.
His leadership was especially remembered during difficult moments in the country’s history. Following the deadly 2011 terrorist attacks in Norway, Harald earned widespread praise for his compassionate response and his efforts to unite the nation.
Born in 1937, Harald spent part of his childhood in the United States after his family fled Nazi-occupied Norway during World War II. He later developed a passion for sailing and represented Norway in three Olympic Games.
His personal life also helped reshape royal tradition. In 1968, Harald married Sonja Haraldsen, a commoner whom he had reportedly dated for years despite initial resistance to their relationship.
News of his passing has triggered an outpouring of condolences from political leaders, royal families and citizens across Europe.
Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre said the country was mourning a monarch who had devoted decades of his life to serving Norway.
Following Harald’s death, his son Haakon has automatically succeeded him as King Haakon VIII, while Haakon’s daughter, Ingrid Alexandra, becomes Crown Princess and heir to the throne.
King Harald leaves behind Queen Sonja, his children, grandchildren and a nation reflecting on the legacy of a monarch who witnessed enormous social change while remaining a powerful symbol of continuity.
