Former Death Row Records boss Suge Knight has reignited one of the most bizarre stories surrounding Tupac Shakur’s death, claiming that some of the legendary rapper’s closest friends smoked a portion of his cremated remains.

Knight’s extraordinary account has resurfaced after TMZ reported his claims on August 19, 2026, nearly 30 years after Tupac died following a drive-by shooting in Las Vegas.

According to Knight, Tupac’s mother, Afeni Shakur, wanted her son cremated shortly after his death. Knight claimed that following the cremation, a bag containing some of Tupac’s ashes was passed among people close to the rapper.

He alleged that some of Tupac’s friends mixed a portion of the ashes into a blunt and smoked it as an unusual tribute to the fallen hip-hop icon. Knight previously gave a similar account in an interview published by People, claiming he personally did not participate because he was on probation at the time.

Tupac died on September 13, 1996, at just 25 years old, six days after being shot multiple times while riding in a vehicle in Las Vegas. Knight was with Tupac during the shooting and was also injured. Tupac was subsequently cremated. Recent courtroom testimony has also confirmed that his ashes were delivered to his family after the cremation.

However, the claim that Tupac’s ashes were smoked has long been disputed. A Vanity Fair account published after his death stated that nobody smoked his ashes and reported that Afeni instead scattered them in a peaceful location in Los Angeles.

That contradiction means Knight’s dramatic version should be treated as his personal account rather than an independently established fact.

Nearly three decades after Tupac’s killing, stories surrounding his final days continue to fascinate fans worldwide. Whether every detail of Knight’s account can ever be proven remains unclear, but the startling allegation has once again placed one of hip-hop’s most enduring legends firmly back in the spotlight.
