$165M Crypto Bombshell: Alleged Ponzi Mastermind Edward Zimbardi Caught After Fleeing to Fiji

A Georgia man accused of masterminding a staggering $165 million cryptocurrency Ponzi scheme is back in the United States after allegedly fleeing thousands of miles to Fiji in an attempt to avoid federal prosecution.

Edward Zimbardi, 59, of Flowery Branch, Georgia, was deported from Fiji to the United States on August 14, 2026, after Fijian authorities learned of the federal charges against him. He is facing multiple counts of wire fraud, money laundering and money laundering conspiracy.

Federal prosecutors allege that between June 2022 and August 2023, Zimbardi created and promoted an investment operation known as “The Crypto Program.” Through websites and promotional videos, investors were allegedly promised an eye-popping 25% monthly return from advertising packages.

Authorities claim thousands of investors transferred cryptocurrency into digital wallets secretly controlled by Zimbardi, with more than $165 million ultimately flowing into the accounts.

But prosecutors allege the money was not used as investors had been promised.

Instead, investigators claim Zimbardi placed more than $34 million into risky foreign currency trades, losing substantial sums. He is also accused of using money from newer investors to make payments to earlier participants—a hallmark of an alleged Ponzi scheme.

Federal authorities further allege that at least $10 million was spent on personal expenses, including luxury vehicles, a house for his son and alimony payments to his former wife.

The Crypto Program reportedly collapsed in August 2023. Prosecutors say Zimbardi subsequently traveled through Hawaii, Fiji and other locations before allegedly fleeing to Fiji in July 2025 after becoming aware of the FBI investigation. He remained there for more than a year.

In another dramatic twist, authorities say Zimbardi canceled plans to attend his son’s wedding in Virginia in May 2026 because he suspected FBI agents were waiting to arrest him.

Zimbardi was indicted on 12 counts of wire fraud, 12 counts of money laundering and one count of money laundering conspiracy.

The case remains pending. An indictment contains allegations only, and Zimbardi is presumed innocent unless prosecutors prove his guilt beyond a reasonable doubt in court.
