A desperate race against time is unfolding across Nepal and China’s Tibet region, where nearly 3,000 people remain missing following catastrophic flash floods that have devastated communities, destroyed homes and left hundreds dead.

As rescue operations entered another critical day, families gathered at hospitals and emergency centers clutching photographs of loved ones, desperately hoping for news that they survived.

Latest figures show at least 669 people have died in Nepal and seven in Tibet, while approximately 2,426 people remain missing in Nepal and another 554 are unaccounted for in Tibet’s Gyirong County. More than 500 of those missing are foreign nationals.

Entire Communities Devastated

The disaster struck Wednesday after a glacier collapse sent a powerful mixture of rock, ice, mud and water crashing through Himalayan river systems.

Buildings, bridges, roads and power facilities were swept away as communities had little time to escape the fast-moving destruction. Rescue teams are continuing to search through thick mud and debris despite difficult weather and dangerous mountainous terrain.

More than 3,700 people have been rescued in Nepal, according to authorities, with military helicopters transporting survivors and delivering emergency supplies to areas cut off by the disaster.

Particular concern remains around the Upper Trishuli-1 Hydropower Project, where authorities believe more than 100 people could be trapped inside a tunnel filled with mud. Specialist rescue teams are being deployed to assist with the complicated operation.

Families Refuse to Give Up Hope

Perhaps the most heartbreaking scenes are unfolding at relief centers and hospitals, where relatives scan lists of survivors, missing persons and victims.

For thousands of families, every passing hour brings greater uncertainty.

Yet rescuers continue searching, and survivors are still being brought to safety days after the disaster.
